West Virginia says it hopes payments for those aged 16 to 35 will “motivate” them to get a jab.

“Our children today probably do not realize the importance of turning this off,” State Governor Jim Justice said Monday.

West Virginia was among the major U.S. states in terms of vaccination rates, but progress has slowed in recent weeks.

There is some concern that young people may be more concerned about receiving a jab.

Motivation means those who have been vaccinated within the age group can earn $ 100, plus interest, later. It will also be given to anyone aged 16 to 35 who has already been vaccinated.

West Virginia has the 16th highest rate of new coronavirus cases per person in the United States, according to the New York Times.

About 52% of its 1.5 million eligible residents have received at least one dose, Judge Justice said, but added 40% of the population may be reluctant to get a jab.

“I’m trying to find a way that will really motivate them, and us, to cross the hump,” he added.

The payment will be funded by a $ 1.9tn (£ 1.4tn) coronavirus aid package, known as CARES, which became legal in the United States last month.

The governor said the government has “examined this in every way” to ensure that the money can be used legally for savings bonds.

Studies have shown that young adults are more likely to be reluctant to get the Covid-19 vaccine than their adults. Some 25% of American adults aged 18 to 29 say they want to “wait and see” before getting a jab, compared to only 7% of those over the age of 65, according to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted last month.

Everyone in America over 16 years old now deserves to be vaccinated. More than half of all American adults have now received at least one test, reports the Centers for Disease Control.
