36 out of 46 MCAs voted against the Governor, reaching two-thirds of the population as required by the constitution.

Earlier in the day, the MCAs voted to adjourn the session to discuss the indictment. The governor had been charged with office violence and misconduct.

He was accused of empowering his wife Wajir Kheira Omar.

Abdi’s administration has been embroiled in controversy after spending nearly two years in and out of court over a case challenging his academic papers.

Another petition was filed by Osman Mohamed, a resident of Wajir, in the Senate demanding Abdi’s removal from office.

Wajir Senator Ali Abdullahi supported Osman’s bid noting that many projects in the county moved at a snail’s pace while others were suspended.

“We have been to almost every office in this country with these complaints. As soon as we complain, the governor does what he does best, persuading officials,” Ali said.

Abdi joins former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and his Kiambu counterpart Ferdinand Waititu who were both prosecuted by county legislatures.

Sonko had been charged with misuse of office and misconduct. This led to a lawsuit filed by the Nairobi MCAs who demanded his removal.

In December 2020, a total of 88 MCA out of 122 voted against the Governor.

Waititu, on the other hand, was charged with misappropriating county funds and misuse of office. This led to the indictment filed by MCA Ndenderu Solomon Kinuthia. In December 2019, a total of 63 MCAs voted unanimously against Waititu.
