The groups are involved in the implementation of various projects initiated by the County Government including poultry, avocado, tomato, dairy and pig farming in the parliamentary constituency.

The groups are part of a total of 314 others from across the County who have benefited from the Ksh 117 million grant funded to fund the second phase of the National Rural Agricultural Growth Program (NARIGP).

Addressing farmers’ representatives at the check-in ceremony at Kianyaga Catholic Church, Governor Waiguru said the projects implemented under the Wezesha Kirinyaga economic empowerment program aim to increase agricultural production in the County to improve the lives of residents.

“The funding will enable farmers to participate in income-generating activities that will reduce the negative impact of COVID-19,” he said.

Waiguru noted that poultry farmers will be helped to raise improved Kienenji poultry for greater egg production, completing a project of one million eggs a month.

Tomato growers will be assisted to build a greenhouse and install drip irrigation systems to enable them to grow tomato processing varieties that will be supplied to the proposed tomato factory.

Avocado growers will be provided with hass apricot seedlings with the aim of increasing production towards the construction of an apricot pack house.

The funding will also help dairy farmers improve their dairy herd through artificial Insemination (AI) by increasing milk production while pig farming groups will be assisted individually by pigs and 20 piglets.

Governor Waiguru noted that the leadership of all the groups has received training on the proper management of the projects and they are expected to ensure the implementation of the projects.

At the same time, he listed various major infrastructure development projects in various sectors such as health, roads, agriculture and urban development.

Waiguru praised the good relations between the County Government, the National Government and development partners, saying it has benefited the County residents in a number of ways.

He commended the Judicial Service Commission for appointing Judge Martha Koome to the post of Chief Justice saying she was very happy that for the first time in history, the State would have a female Chief Justice.

The governor said the appointment to lead one government arm is a fast-paced arrangement that will give hope to other women that they can achieve whatever they desire.
