Muturi will serve for a period of six years on the commission. He will replace Lydia Nzomo whose six-year term ended in November 2020.

“In carrying out the powers conferred on Article 250 (2) of the Constitution as read by section 8 (10) of the Teachers’ Service Commission Act, 2012, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces , select Jamleck Muturi John. ”

The president also appointed Timon Oyucho as a member of the TSC for a term of six years.

The two were appointed by the president in March and later underwent an investigation in the National Assembly.

When he appeared before the National Education Committee, Muturi said he would improve the quality of teaching by reinstating teachers.

He also pledged to implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed between the TSC and the teachers’ unions in 2017.

He vowed to find ways to motivate teachers so that they can provide their services effectively.

Oyucho was a lawyer with the TSC until his appointment and was leading the case against the Kenya Teachers Union (KNUT).

The two bodies focused on legal battles over teacher promotion, transfer and registration.

ODM leader Raila Odinga was embroiled in controversy, noting that the TSC was on its way to assassinate KNUT.

“Teachers may have been intimidated and silenced as the great movement they have built since the beginning since 1957, and which they are proud of, is being brought to their knees. But they are certainly not happy.”
