Two children have been killed and 16 others injured after a man entered a kindergarten with a knife in southern China, state media reported.

Two of the injured are in critical condition after a massacre in Beiliu City, Guangxi Zhuang, an autonomous region.

The motive for Wednesday’s attack is unknown, but the suspect is reported to have entered a kindergarten in the Xinfeng area of ​​Beiliu around 2pm.

Sixteen children and two teachers were injured.

Xinhua reported that two children later died from their injuries. Two of the injured were undergoing surgery and 14 others were receiving treatment.

Kindergartens in China generally take children from the age of three to six.

Earlier violent attacks on school children in China include the September 2019 incident in which eight children were killed in Hubei province, and the death of nine middle school students in northern China when one person attacked them on their way home in April 2018.

The 28-year-old allegedly claimed he had been bullied at school as a child.
