A Mombasa resident lawyer has been charged with attempting to obtain Ksh 1.1 billion from a Chinese construction company.

Stephen Kithi Ngombo faces two charges that the State is accusing him of receiving false money in a land acquisition scheme.

The indictment shows that the suspect tried to get money from China Wuyi Kenya Limited by pretending to sell the company a tour of the Tourism Finance Agency.

The Mombasa-based lawyer is alleged to have committed the offense in Mombasa on July 30, 2016.

Ngombo is further accused of receiving Ksh 20 million from a construction company.

He is accused that on April 18, 2017, with intent to defraud, he obtained money from the company by pretending to be a partial payment in exchange for open ownership of the plot.

The lawyer, who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Rita Amwayi, denied the two charges.

He was given Ksh 500,000 cash cash and an alternative bond of Ksh 2 Million and one surety of the same amount.

The trial is set to begin on May 17.
