Garissa County Commissioner Meru Mwangi has warned that he will take strong action against people who continue to gamble in the county.

Mwangi said the illegal trade had become a nuisance in the county and affected children after the school was closed for a long time due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Speaking after leading KRA officials and security officials in the county to destroy 26 gambling machines worth more than seven hundred thousand shillings, Mwangi said the government was targeting the owners of the businesses.

“Those who are doing this work should stop completely because the government has a long hand, it will arrest them and take them to court to be tried according to the law,” said the commissioner.

That comes almost two years after National Security Minister Fred Matiang’i ordered county commissioners to tackle gambling.

Minister Matiang’i ordered the closure of the businesses and revoked the gambling licenses.

The Minister warned foreign nationals engaging in illegal gambling activities in the country that they would be arrested and repatriated.
