The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Peter Munya has launched three state-of-the-art boats that will enable fishermen in the coastal area to fish in the deep sea.

Munya said the three boats would be distributed to fishermen in Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu counties to enable them to fish in the deep sea.

Munya hinted that two more modern boats would be purchased and distributed to Lamu and Tana River fishermen.

Munya launched the boats in the Liwatoni area of the Mombasa port where he said fishing activities would be strengthened in the country and boost economic and social prosperity.

The minister said the launch comes at a time when 186 local fishermen have undergone deep-sea fishing training at the Mombasa Maritime College.

Munya said fishermen in the area have been facing a lack of boats to enable them to fish in the deep sea, an activity that has been left to foreign fishermen with better boats.

The minister pointed out that the government is committed to investing more in the fishing industry in order to increase the sector’s contribution to gross domestic product and increase employment opportunities.
