Under a consortium that includes Vodacom Group Ltd (South Africa), Vodafone Group PLC (UK), CDC Group PLC (UK) and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan), Safaricom now faces only one competitor in the tender, MTN Group.

In a statement on April 28, 2021, the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) stated that only two bidders had expressed interest in obtaining a license.

“In accordance with 33 of the Tender Regulations, Qualified Tenders are International Cooperation for Ethiopia (Vodafone, Vodacom, Safaricom, Sumitomo & CDC Group) and MTN International (Mauritius) Limited,” the ECA said.

“Pursuant to Sections 34 and 35 of the Tender Regulations, this list of Qualified Tenders has been published on the ECA website by the Ministry of Finance and an invitation to the Opening Conference on Financial Offerings will be sent to Qualified Tenders.”

In a statement on April 26, Safaricom warned its shareholders to be cautious when trading stocks on the Nairobi Stock Exchange on the issue.

“Until further announcements on the tender process are issued, Safaricom PLC shareholders and other investors are advised to be cautious when handling Safaricom PLC shares, at Nairobi Security,” Safaricom company secretary Kathryne Maundu said.

The Ethiopian government is expected to evaluate the bids within a one-month window and announce the successful companies by May.
