The Public Service Commission has called on the national assembly to increase funding for the public service apprenticeship program..

According to the commission, the move will enable them to provide more young people with on-the-job training.

The commission’s deputy chairperson Charity Kisotu said since the program was launched in 2019, the commission has been able to employ 5,500 students in two phases.

The first phase employed 3,100 students in 2019 while the second phase had 2,400 students in 2020.

The two were funded by the government at a cost of 1.1 billion shillings.

Kisotu commended the national assembly for its role in allocating funds for the initiative.

However he said the budget was reduced to 374 million shillings during the current period of government spending, resulting in the employment of almost 2,400 students.

According to Kisotu, ministries, departments and various public organizations need 9,000 students

He said this when the 2,400 students recruited in December last year officially began their ministry.

He said the government plans to expand the program through partnerships with the private sector.
