Nabbed two in Kilimani and Sh750 Million in counterfeit currency –

On Tuesday two men were arrested for possessing counterfeit coins worth at least Sh750 million.

The two, Samuel Maina and Boniface Mungai, were tracked down at Kilimani’s house where police discovered the counterfeit money.

The counterfeit coins were in US $ 100 bills totaling US $ 6,820,000, 100 Euros counterfeit 100 bills amounting to Euro 490,000 and counterfeit Kenyan shillings 1000 denominations valued at Sh6.4 million.

At the house, police also found counterfeit chemicals and badges bearing the names of UN, Della Rue and National Treasury.

The suspects were also carrying bags, machines, two bottles and jars containing unknown liquid, bonded documents, customs reflection jackets, stickers and stamps of various offices with their seals.

According to Nairobi police chief Augustine Nthumbi, officials were investigating whether the counterfeit money had spread in the market.

They suspect the men were targeting banks and unsuspecting customers.

“We warn anyone against handling the money. It is a crime and has a negative impact on the economy, ”he said.

In 2019, counterfeit Sh300 million was found on the sidewalk along Ngong Road. In May of the same year, nine suspects were arrested in Kilimani with Sh190 million in counterfeit currency.
