MCK celebrates World Press Freedom Day on Monday – KBC


The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) on Monday will mark World Press Freedom Day in Nairobi.

MCK has partnered with the Communications Authority of Kenya, the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA), the Open Society of Kenya (OSIEA), the Central Commission of Canada, the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), Transparency International (TI), Institute of the Constitution, the Girl Child Network and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) for this year’s celebration.

The theme for this year’s celebration is Information as a Public Benefit which is a call to affirm the importance of valuing information and exploring what can be done in the production, distribution, and reception of content to enhance journalism, and promote transparency and empowerment. back.

This year’s celebration coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration on the Development of Independent, Independent and Pluralistic Media, which led to the UN declaring World Press Freedom Day in 1993.

MCK along with FHI360 will also launch the Information Sector Law Review Report.

This is a review of laws affecting the practice of journalism and the media in Kenya. The analysis looks at 20 laws that, in one way or another, affect the performance of the media in Kenya.

The ceremony will be presided over by Hon. Justin Muturi, Speaker of Parliament, accompanied by Ms. Esther Koimett, CBS, Permanent Secretary, State Department of Telecommunications and Broadcasting, Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs.

The event will be hosted by the Media Council of Kenya, chaired by the Chairman of the Council, Mr Maina Muiruri and the Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Omwoyo.
