At a press conference this afternoon, Professor Olive Mugenda, who is chairing the panel, announced that Judge Koome had emerged victorious following the candidates’ interview which ended last week.

The announcement came just hours after the Court of Appeal overturned an order issued by the Supreme Court barring JSC from continuing the registration of the Chief Justice of Kenya.

The JSC interviewed Koome along with other candidates including Judge Chitembwe Juma, Professor Patricia Kameri Mbote, Judge Marete Njagi, Advocate Philip Murgor, Judge Nduma Mathews Nderi, Advocate Fred Ngatia, Judge Ouko William Okello, Professor Dr. Dr. Wekesa Moni and Attorney Alice Jepkoech Yano.

Martha Koome’s name will be tabled in Parliament and if lawmakers approve the nomination, then President Uhuru Kenyatta will officially appoint her as Kenya’s new Chief Justice and the first woman.
