Mwangi pleaded guilty in the Kibera Law Courts and was subsequently sentenced.

In a decision handed down by Senior Resident Magistrate Charles Mwaniki on Thursday, the accused was given the opportunity to pay a fine of Sh250,000 or serve a sentence.

Mwangi was found carrying 25 ethanol drums on a truck he was driving.

The truck was seized in Ruaka, Kiambu County, by detectives from the Special Services Unit who had been notified.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, the drums, which were packed into a chemical compound, were hidden in 50 sacks of maize, giving the false impression that he was transporting corn.

In his decision, the judge ordered that 5,000 liters of ethanol be lost to the government, through the Kenya Revenue Authority, who would be free to redeem it and pay unpaid taxes.

“We commend the court for its prompt and prudent decision as ethanol could also pave the way for sanitation,” DCI said in a statement Friday.

The seized truck, DCI said, will be given to its owner and the corn given to the accused.
