Residents say the failure to speed up tree planting continues to hurt them with increasing rates of respiratory diseases on the rise.

They aim to plant more than one hundred thousand trees in less than a month

Led by Machakos County Speaker who is a resident of the area Florence Mwangangi and Mlolongo ward representative – Syokimau Daniel Mbevi, locals especially young people planted unusual and exotic trees at Mlolongo Primary School.

Ms Mwangangi said the move, which is in line with the Government’s call for an increase in tree coverage, will serve justice to the urban population who lack fresh air due to industrial growth.

He said the exercise would take place in the Mavoko constituency and thus increase energy by cleaning up carbon.

Explaining his views, Mr Mbevi said residents of the area have suffered from dirty air and the time has come to save themselves by starting a private tree planting program.

This comes at a time when the Council of Governors has launched a two-million-tree planting campaign and the tree is expected to be planted by President Uhuru Kenyatta during the launch of the devolution conference in Makueni County later this year.
