Kenyans pay more to access the internet compared to their counterparts in the East African region.

A new study by a British company which analyzed mobile data plans in 230 countries around the world ranked Tanzania as the most affordable country in East Africa compared to Kenya and Uganda.

In the international rankings, Tanzania ranks 32nd, Uganda ranks 86th while Kenya and Ethiopia rank 118th and 94th respectively.

In Tanzania, internet users will pay an average of 80 shillings per gigabyte of data compared to a consumer in Uganda and Kenya who share 166 shillings and 240 shillings per GB of controlled Internet.

A consumer in Ethiopia will give up 182 shillings for one gigabyte. Sudan has the cheapest network in Africa and ranks fifth in the world, with its users paying 29 shillings per GB.

The world’s most expensive mobile data acquisition is Equatorial Guinea, where an average cost of one gigabyte goes for 5,312 shillings, almost a thousand times the cost of mobile data in Israel – which has the world’s cheapest data plan.
