Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the National Response Committee (NERC) reached the decision after discussions following an increase in COVID-19 cases in India.

“The committee observed the worst cases in India and noted the increase in COVID-19 infections in the country. The Committee sympathized with the situation and through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed solidarity with the Government of India in addressing the situation. The committee regretted the occasion but was given access, deciding to suspend all passenger flights entering and leaving the country for a period of 14 days for inspection. “He said

The suspension starts on Saturday at midnight meaning passengers traveling to or from India have only 72 hours to do so.

“All passengers arriving from India within these 72 hours will have a rapid antigen examination upon arrival at our ports of entry and will be required to adhere closely to the 14-day separation period which will be closely monitored by our Health Officers.” He added

He said however cargo planes from India will remain in service according to the transport protocol examination.

Kagwe, however, said Kenya cared about India at this difficult time and pledged to help the Asian country deal with the situation.

India has recorded 18,160,747 COVID-19 cases so far and 202,107 deaths.
