The government has reiterated its commitment to ensure that it organizes the world car and world championships for athletes under the age of 20 this year in a meaningful way.

The Safari Rally was reintroduced to the FIA’s international motor racing calendar in 2019 after an 18-year wait and was postponed from last year to this year due to the 19th covid disaster.

Kenya will also host the World Championships for athletes under the age of 20 between August 17 and 22 this year.

Speaking at a discussion on how global investment will run the games in Article 4 of the Future Investment Initiative, sports minister Dr Amina Mohamed said Kenya was ready to host the two major competitions this year and the right approach.

“Kenya has demonstrated its unique ability to host international competitions and we welcome the world to the WRC competition here in the country between June 24 and 27 as well as the world athletics competition for the under-20s on August 17 to 22” said Amina

The Minister added that the country has imposed strict conditions on compliance against COVID 19 to ensure the lives of all participants in these world competitions are not in danger.

“We have put in place a special Covid 19 system that must be followed before returning to sports in the country that will ensure the safety of local and international sports participants. Sports is an important link for this nation and we are committed to promoting and expanding our sovereignty not only here in the country, but also at the international level ”added Amina

The president of the International Federation of Athletics Federations (FIA) Jean Todt, who spoke at the meeting with Minister Amina, commended Kenya for their preparations for this year’s world championships.

Todt visited the country in November last year and promised to help Kenya improve road safety and adapt to climate change ahead of the Safaru Rally.

“Kenya is a major ally of the FIA and we will continue to work closely with the Kenyan government to ensure the return of the world championships in Kenya to boost the economy and levels of compatibility for this nation,” Todt said in November 2020 when he met with President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Nairobi palace.
