JSC lists CJ, interviews of Supreme Court judges continue – KBC

The Court of Appeal has suspended orders issued by the High Court barring the appointment of the Chief Justice and the High Court Judge.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) he is now free to appoint the next Chief Justice and conduct interviews with the Supreme Court Judge.

The interviewees for the CJ post are Judge Chitembwe Juma, Professor Patricia Kameri-Mbote, Lawyer Judge Martha Koome, Judge Marete Njagi, Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, Judge Nduma Mathews Nderi, Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia, Hon. Judge Ouko William Okello, Prof. Dr. Dr. Wekesa Moni and Attorney Alice Jepkoech Yano.

All 10 JSC Commissioners – Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu (High Court), Judge Mohamed Warsame (Court of Appeal), Judge David Majanja (High Court), Ms. Olwande (High Court), Macharia Njeru (Kenya Lawyers Association) ), Ms Ann Amadi (Registrar of Courts), Mr Kihara Kariuki (Attorney General), Patrick Gichohi (Public Service Commission), Mr Felix Koskei (public representative) and Prof Olive Mugenda (public representative) – supervised election process.

The Commission is now expected to nominate a candidate nominated by the President in accordance with the approval of Parliament as stipulated under Article 166 (1) of the Constitution.

Section 167 (2) replaces the Chief Justice in ten years but the incumbent is required to vacate office regardless of the mandatory retirement age as stipulated in section 167 (1).

The new Chief Justice will be Kenya and the third under the 2010 Constitution.

The nine candidates scheduled to appear before the JSC to defend their eligibility to be High Court Judge are Judge Said Chitembwe, Female Judge Martha Koome, Judge M’inoti Kathurima, Judge Nduma Nderi, Lumumba Nyaberi, Judge William Ouko, Judge Joseph Sergon, Judge Marete Njagi , and Alice Yano.

The vacancies were vacant following the retirement of Chief Justice David Maraga and Judge Jackton Boma Ojwang.
