The government has promised to immediately launch an operation to seize illegal possession of weapons in Marsabit County as part of efforts to find lasting peace in the area..

Minister of National Security Dr. Fred Matiang’i told a national parliamentary security committee that police were looking for leaders who had been arming residents.

This follows instances of insecurity in the northern part of the country where militant groups and bandits have been carrying out attacks and stealing livestock from residents.

Dr. Matiang’i has vowed to take legal action against any leader found inciting and armed criminals in the area.

The minister was speaking in the national assembly where he said illegal possession of firearms in the northern region exacerbated frequent social clashes in the region.

Matiang’I pointed out that the illegal possession of firearms was one of the key steps in ensuring peace in the troubled region.

According to Matiang’I the Marsabit riots have resulted in disaster, displacement of residents, property damage and the disruption of economic activities in the county.

“Strategies have been put in place to ensure that the proposed police stations are operational. “Officers will be provided with the necessary equipment including armored vehicles, dog police units and aerial cameras,” said the minister.
