The journalist, Mariel Muller, was conducting an interview when police shot her twice in the leg with a tear gas cannon fired.

“The second time they hit me straight while we were doing an interview with DW,” he added.

Journalist David Bett, who was also covering the protest, was told kenyagist.com that the protests, dubbed the Hunger Revolution, were peaceful.

“Apparently police officers were sent to ensure that it did not happen. So they came in and started throwing tears at people nearby, “he said.

The Association of Foreign Journalists, Africa has strongly condemned the move by the Kenyan police. The party said it would not stand by when allegations of harassment of journalists took place.

“Journalists should not be the main target of attack, arrest or intimidation by the police especially when they are clearly identified as members of the media,” the party said.

Part of the issues that the protesters wanted to address include; eliminating partial evacuation and evenings until the hour of no departure, the provision of food for everyone, the immediate cessation of police killings and atrocities and government repression.

Others include; access to free and quality health care, clean water supply, better housing, equal access to employment, free education, immediate cessation of sexual violence and others.

Hashtag, “#PeoplesMarchToStateHouse”, added a better part of Friday, April 30, with activists demanding that their voices be heard.

Since then President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for an end to the movement and reduced curfews from 8pm to 4am to 10pm to 4am.
