The Ol Pejeta Conservancy announced on Thursday that four other North Rhinoceros tubes had been made from an oak collected from Fatu (Sudan’s grandson).

Through a statement, the conservation stated that the eggs were harvested by a consortium of scientists and conservationists who worked to prevent the extinction of the northern white rhinoceros through advanced reproductive technologies.

This is the most successful series of procedures – from oocyte collection in Kenya to in vitro fertilization and livestock conservation in Italy – the Leibniz Institute for Animal and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW), Safari Park Dv? R Králové , Kenya Wildlife Service, Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Avantea have done, ”the conservation found.

In addition, the team confirmed the successful breeding of the southern Owuan rhino herd, which took place in December 2020.

The cow will now be introduced to southern Ol Pejeta rhino women who have been identified as potential maternal mothers for the northern white rhinoceros later.

The Najin and Fatu women at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya, are the only white northern rhinos left in the world.

Secretary of the Cabinet for Tourism and Wildlife Najib Balala speaking on the main stage said that the project partners should now begin the next stage of the project – the transfer of embryos to white women in the south at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

“We want to get a generation from a project that will ensure the survival of the species,” he said.

Harvesting Process

The Leibniz-IZW BioRescue International Community of Scientists and Conservationists has been harvesting oocytes from two females and implanting these artificial ones with sperm stored from dead men to form suitable white rhino eggs since 2019.

In the near future, embryos will be transferred to southern mothers of white rhinos to form a white rhinoceros family in the north.

On March 28, 2021, 19 oocytes were extracted from Fatu’s ovary using ultrasound-guided examination, after the animal was placed under general anesthesia.

Fatu is the youngest of the two northern white rhinos, the daughter of Najin and the grandson of Sudan.

Both anesthesia and egg procedure went smoothly and without difficulty.

After transplanting and maturing egg cells at the Avantea laboratory in Italy, 14 of them were fertilized with sperm purified from a young white rhinoceros cow dead in Sunni using a procedure called intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Four oocytes containing fertilizers developed into suitable embryos that are now stored in liquid nitrogen and five embryos that have already been formed in previous processes.

Embryonic growth was achieved with the help of Geri ®, an innovative bench bench incubator capable of continuous embryo monitoring designed to provide a personalized and trouble-free environment, and provided by Merck.

During a recent procedure, Najin, now 31, was placed under light sedation while standing and examined via ultrasound.

After the power test results, the team decided not to try the procedure as it did not appear to have enough promising oocytes. The coalition will soon discuss whether and how to proceed with oocyte and Najin collections, as ethical risk assessments are an integral part of the plan.
