He also tried to seize the seat in 2007 but was still defeated by Were. He retired from politics and ventured into private business.

Funeral arrangements for the late MP are underway.

Local MP Peter Nabulindo led the residents in consolation with his Bashitsetse clan and immediate family.

Several leaders took to social media to mourn the veteran politician, including ODM leader Raila Odinga, who praised Wamukoya as a close friend who volunteered to serve the country and the people of Matungu State.

“This was a very close friend who was very dedicated to our country and to his people of Matungu. He left an indelible mark as director of Livestock Services in Kenya. My thoughts are with his family and the people of Matungu, ”he said.

“Hon. Dr. Joseph Wamukoya was a diligent and intellectual leader who served in the 8th Parliament as the first Member of Parliament for Matungu State. His death has robbed us of a leader whose focus was on development, peace and uplifting the lives of the people, “Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said.
