Speaking during an anti-locust operation in Isiolo County, government spokesman Cyrus Oguna said that in an effort to eradicate the young locusts early on, the government had taken decisive action.

This is the first time in 70 years that locusts have invaded the country. The government is committed to addressing this situation for our food security, ”said Oguna

Oguna also said the government is cooperating with county governments in efforts to eradicate the locusts.

The government has been spraying locusts with insecticides in the affected areas. Local leaders have been instrumental in educating residents whose farms are being sprayed on what they should or should not do when their fields are sprayed, ”Oguna suggested.

Over the past five days, swarms of locusts have been reported in 15 counties including Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo, Meru, Tharaka, Tana River, and Kilifi.

Other counties are Kitui, Machakos, Laikipia, Nakuru, and Nyandarua. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the number of locusts is declining.
