The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has ignored widespread allegations that it passed different versions of the 2020 Constitution Amendment Bill, also known as the BBI Bill, to county legislatures.

In a statement to the media on Thursday evening, the election agency instead insisted that it only submitted copies that it had received from the Secretariat for the Construction of Bridges of Construction Bridges headed by Chairman Junet Mohamed and Dennis Waweru.

According to IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, the commission had urged BBI promoters additional documents on the bill to pass county meetings after six initial copies were sent to the commission during the signing process.

“BBI developers brought to the commission 50 copies of the Bill, of which the commission submitted forty-seven (47) copies to the county legislatures,” Chebukati said in a statement.

His response comes amid concerns that the BBI process had plunged into chaos after allegations that only 13 county conferences had received the correct version of the law for consideration.

This has been cited as one of the reasons for the alleged stalemate in parliament which allegedly suspended the decision on the BBI Bill from the August House.
