Baringo County Assembly has been the first to reject the 2020 constitutional amendment bill.

The bill, proposed through the BBI, has sparked a heated debate in the county legislature.

The violence began shortly after Charles Kosgei, chairman of the Justice and Justice Committee, introduced the bill, a move that has sparked heated debate between supporters and opponents of the bill.

Opposition members of the House of Representatives called for the bill to be debated and voted on immediately, while those supporting it called for the debate to be adjourned to allow for public participation.

The speaker of the county assembly had a difficult time restoring stability as riot police were forced to use tear gas to calm the situation in parliament.

Later the debate began and finally ward representatives voted where at least 30 of them voted and obliged the speaker to announce the negative results.

Political tensions between Deputy President William Ruto and the county’s Senator Gideon Moi have escalated, with violence erupting between parliamentary representatives supporting Moi’s supporters and those of Ruto.

The bill has now been passed by three parliaments in Siaya, Kisumu and Homabay Counties and needs to be passed by at least 21 more parliaments before it can be tabled in the National Assembly.
