The government has instructed boarding school principals to improve security, especially in dormitories, to reduce student visas.

Secretary of Primary Education Dr. Belio Kipsang said the move would help curb fire incidents at schools, while urging head teachers to ensure there are enough guards and teachers on duty in the target areas.

In a statement to the newsrooms, Dr. Kipsang said the Ministry of Education was deeply saddened by the recent spate of misconduct among students which has resulted in many schools being set on fire.

“We want school principals to report to the police all criminal cases committed by students so that action can be taken and they should be informed that their involvement in criminal activities will ruin their future,” the secretary stressed.

The secretary also called on school administrators to be more vigilant and to close loopholes that could be used to smuggle drugs into schools.

In addition, Kipsanga has instructed education directors in counties and sub-counties across the country to ensure that all head teachers of boarding schools sleep within the school to ensure they are paying adequate attention to the safety of school resources.

He stressed the need for the school to organize counseling sessions for students who he said may have been infected with bad habits while at home after school was closed due to the crown tragedy.
