Joseph Mwangi, 32, was arrested by detectives from the Special Services Unit, after he caught a truck in Ruaka Kiambu County, and was found with 25 ethanol drums.

The drums, which had filled the border with a chemical compound, were carefully loaded onto a truck that he was driving and hid with 50 sacks of maize, giving the false impression that he was transporting corn.

In a verdict in the Kibera law courts, Senior Resident Magistrate Charles Mwaniki sentenced the suspect to one year in prison and a fine of Ksh 250,000.

The judge further ordered that 5,000 liters of ethanol be lost to the government, through the Kenya Revenue Authority who will be free to redeem and recover unpaid taxes.
At the same time, the truck will be delivered to its owner and the corn returned to the suspect.
